Pianissimo in electromobility

Pianissimo in electromobility

Having already proven our development and process expertise in acoustic solutions for combustion engines many times, our acoustic specialists at POLYTEC are now forging ideas for vehicles with electric or hybrid drives that are as quiet as possible.

Since July 2020, all electric vehicles have been equipped with sound generators that provide an unobtrusive but clearly perceptible sound at low speeds, which gets louder from the start up to about 30 km/h and then fades out again. This ensures greater safety for pedestrians. At medium and higher speeds, however, drive noise, rolling noise and, subsequently, wind noise become dominant.

All these sources also exist, even if in a different form, in electric vehicles. Industry experts confirm that the need for acoustic components per vehicle is even increasing due to electrification. Thanks to our continuous research activities, our acknowledged innovative strength, and our reliable production experience with complex acoustic components, we at POLYTEC are well equipped to ensure "pianissimo" and significantly improved driving comfort in hybrid and electric vehicles.

PROCESS-SAFE

FOR LARGE SERIES

The technological focus is on the processing of polyurethane systems. On the one hand, components with visual requirements must have a high-quality surface finish with a wide variety of structures, grains or logos, while on the functional side, the components must be designed to be as open-pored or sound-absorbing as possible. Additional challenges are often complex geometries, fastening systems and the strictest flame protection requirements. Since 2020, we have been producing a polyurethane engine cover for a mild hybrid drive of a German car manufacturer at our plant in Hörsching/Austria in series. In the future, we will supply more than 600,000 units of this sophisticated cover per year in all performance levels and installation variants.

ALWAYS KEEPING AN EYE

ON THE CO2 BALANCE

In addition to product solutions for electromobility, our POLYTEC Solution Force does not lose sight of the ecological footprint in other areas either. POLYTEC products currently offer not only improved vehicle acoustics but also measurable and therefore approval-relevant advantages in the CO2 balance of vehicles with combustion or hybrid engines. This is because essential components are thermally insulated and thus remain in the preferred operating window for longer during start-stop phases. In addition, material and process experts are looking at how polyurethane recyclates can be reintroduced into the manufacturing process in the future in order to conserve resources. In the case of thermoplastics, the broadest possible processing of so-called regranulates has long been POLYTEC practice.

POWERTRAIN ACOUSTICS

OF THE FUTURE

Within the newly established product line "Powertrain Acoustics", we are intensively dealing with future mobility solutions. We focus on the acoustic isolation of high frequencies, which are emitted by power electronics, for example. One thing is certain: POLYTEC is ideally equipped technologically for the already completed shift towards electromobility. We want to understand the market even better with regard to new vehicles and platforms and also successfully develop further areas of application with our customers, both in the passenger car and commercial vehicle sectors.
