Part-time predeveloper

Linda Penkhues

Part-time predeveloper, Lohne location (Germany)

When did you join POLYTEC and in what function?

I started work at POLYTEC on August 1st 2004 as a dual system student. In the course of my studies I was thus able to obtain insights into a variety of departments.

How has your career in the company progressed to date?

Since the completion of my degree in 2008, I have been a member of the Predevelopment Department and from 2009 until 2011 I was also a deputy team leader. Following the birth of my baby and maternity leave, I started work again in May 2012 on a 12-hour per week basis and since then have been employed part-time.

What is your current assignment area?

I mostly look after the validation of oil sumps and cylinder head covers, the drawing up of trial schedules and the completion of testing such as oil separation, material tests, vibration simulations and resonance measurement. In addition, in April 2015 I assumed responsibility for the development and management of the “Integrated Acoustic Solutions” area for engine encapsulation within the scope of predevelopment.

How has POLYTEC supported your development?

Following the birth of my daughter, I was able to organise my maternity leave in a highly flexible manner and therefore had the chance to return to work early. I was also allowed to gradually raise the number of my working hours and thus deal with the increasing scope of my assignments. In the testing and predevelopment area, personal advancement is helped greatly by being constantly up to speed with the state of the art wherever possible and therefore visits to trade fairs and external training are important in this connection.

What degree of flexibility is required of you?
Motherhood means that business travel and fast-moving project work require a great deal of planning and thus a high degree of flexibility.

To what limitations is your job subject?

On occasions appointments take place outside my working hours and therefore I cannot attend. Moreover, my part-time working means that I frequently do not receive information from status and internal departmental meetings. In view of my current area of activity, in future a full-time job would be desirable, but the feasibility of this solution must first be examined.

What do you like about POLYTEC as an employer...

...the opportunity to master the balancing act between my family and career and thus successfully manage my responsible tasks as both an engineer and a mother.
